NRKL Rules confirmed for 2023

The final version of the NRKL Sporting Regs are now available. There are some small changes for our first season as well as some new additions based on thoughts from the community.

Weight Classes Renamed

For the first championship, the weight classes will feature new names. While the weights will stay the same, the 65kg class will use the featherweight title, while the 80kg and 95 kg will adopt lightweight and heavyweight titles. During the full season, drivers may change their weight class any time before their first event without a penalty. If a driver wishes to change class after their first round, they will receive a 50 point penalty.

Introducing the North East Trophy

A 2 round mini-series running alongside the main championship, the North East Trophy will give drivers something extra to fight for. The opening round will take place at Teesside in May, before the finale taking place at Warden Law in August. Drivers who enter either round will be automatically signed up for the NE Trophy, while a special season pass is available for drivers who just want to enter these rounds, at a £10 discount.

Welcome to the teams championship

After running a pole on our Instagram page, there was a clear want for a teams championship for 2023, so we have introduced one. The teams championship will be open to teams of up to 3 drivers at each event, with teams allowed to field up to 6 drivers over the course of the season. This accounts for some drivers possibly not being able to compete in every round. Teams will need to nominate their drivers no fewer than 7 days prior to their first event, with any changes being made 7 days prior to the event in question.

Points will be scored using the same system as the main championship, the only difference being a lack of dropped scores for the teams championship.

3 different event formats during the season

The first edition of the NRKL will see the majority of rounds using the tried and tested heats format we saw at prologue, named ‘Heats+’. However, at 3 rounds the formats will be shaken up slightly. Firstly, Whilton Mill will see drivers have just 2 heats to decide their qualifying positions for the finals, with the races running to a lap distance instead of time.

Warden Law and Teesside will see the biggest changes, with the introduction of the ‘sprint’ format. At these events, drivers will first have a 10 minute qualifying session before a pair of 20 minute sprint races. The grid for the first race will see drivers line up in qualifying order, while race 2 will use the result of race 1 to decide the grid.

The full racing regulations can be found here. The NRKL kicks off on March 25th at Rowrah.

Rowrah to kick off 8 round NRKL Season

With the new year well and truely here, the 2023 NRKL Calendar is starting to take place, and we can confirm the venue for our opening round of 2023. Those who attened the prologue will already know, but we will be heading to Rowrah for round 1. We also confirm that our 2023 season will consist of 8 races over the North of the country.

Set into the side of a disused quary, the Cumbrian circuit is 1050m of challenging corners and massive elevation changes, this circuit is the perfect place to host our opening round. The circuit will also be receiving a new fleet of karts which should make kart parity even better when we visit in March.

The event itself will follow the same format as our prologue event, with drivers contesting in a 5 minute practice, then moving into 3 x 10 minute heats before contesting a 12 minute final. As our sporting regulations, drivers will score points at the end of the heats and for their finishing position in the final, meaning consistency is key.

The event will also see the first use of our licence system, with driving standards at the front of our minds. Just like a licence on the road, drivers will score points based on their (erm) indiscretions, with a scale employed based on what the driver’s found to be doing. These will be published after the event, with 12 points leading to a race ban. We are also looking to have a specific driving standards observer for each race.

As for the rest of the calendar, that will be released in the coming days, subject to finalising the last deals with host circuits for 2023.

Race Report

NRKL Roars to life at Three Sisters

For the first time, 36 drivers descended on Three Sisters in Wigan to make history: compete in the first NRKL event ever. The event would be held under the lights, with the track itself greasy and drying out, meaning our drivers would have a true test to start off.

With equal entries over our 3 classes: Lights, Middles & Heavyweights, all 3 classes would be mixed together for this inaugural event. That meant that everyone would race against each other, regardless of class, making a true challenge for our drivers. The grid itself was made up of drivers from various series around the country including the world of indoor karting and outdoor karting.

As the heats started, it was clear there would be some battles throughout the whole field. Each of the 6 heats were hard fought contests, with elbows out throughout the whole field. By using the heats to establish a driver’s grid position for the final, every position mattered.

When the heats were over, the points were totted up and drivers were slotted into the A or B final. The big talking point when the grids came out was that John Paragon was the only heavyweight to qualify for the A final, meaning he was guaranteed a top 2 finish. This was only because the winner of the B final would start in last for the A final, meaning if the 11 remaining heavyweights wanted to take the victory, they knew what they had to do.

The B final itself ended up being won by middleweight Connor Ratbhone after a late penalty for Oliver Bailey dropped him outside the top 5. Behind him, Cayle Simmons and Tom Owens finished top 1st & 2nd in heavyweights, earning them a step on the podium, and Guaranteeing Paragon the victory before the A final started.

The A final itself saw an amazing race long battle between Tommy Lee, Barry Lakes and James Barrett. The trio were inseparable despite Tommy & James being lightweights, and Barry being a middleweight. Despite having a near perfect run in the heats, it wouldn’t be David Metcalfe’s night, an incident going into the first corner dropped the favourite out of the running for the win. Behind, Rathbone was blazing a trail through the field, managing to run as high as 7th despite starting 18th and last.

The race would end with a drag race to the line between the top 3, with Tommy Lee breaking the beam first to take the overall win with James Barrett second and Barry Lakes 3rd, the top 3 separated by just a single tenth at the flag. Behind them, Scott Clenaghan won the battle for 4th ahead of Adam Davis and Jacob Sharrock who were also separated by a hand full of tenths.

A massive thank you has to go to everyone who turned out to race, having 35 drivers on the grid for our first event is more than I could of ever expected and only shows the interest in what we are doing here.” said championship coordinator Tom Gibson. “Now we are looking forward to the opening round of the 2023 season with lots of drivers showing interest in joining us for the full season, it promises to be a great season.
